I have returned, my friends. I have returned...to haunt you.

Wow.  It's been more than a month since I posted, and considering that I never wrote one of my typical "I'm taking a blogging break" posts, I'm afraid it may have seemed as if I'd fallen off the face of the earth.  (Ouch.  That would have hurt.)  No worries though.  That phenomenon did not happen to me.  My feet are still firmly planted on the good old ground.  And I am here, my friends.  Here to relate to you all the marvelous and exciting things that have been going on in my life lately.  (Yes.  This is a "Lately I've been" post.  And no, I'm not really going to tell you everything that's been going on with me the past couple months.  That would take far too long.  Be far too boring.  And...it just can't be done, okay?)

Right.  So.

Lately I've been:

~Working~

Business picked up this past month at the motel (due to the changing seasons) so I was suddenly a great deal busier than I had been since December.  Between work at the motel and work at the café I've been feeling pretty exhausted.  (Okay, maybe keeping late hours and watching too many movies and a few other factors play into that as well, but we're not talking about that right now, we're talking about work.)  Yes, and speaking of work, I did it again.  I quit another job.  (Because that's what Miss Marches do best!)  No but seriously, it was a responsible, clear-headed decision.  It really was.  In short,  I am no longer working at the café.  I decided to pick up more hours at the motel instead and focus on just one job.  And I think it's going to prove to have been a good decision.  I have high hopes for finally getting into a more regular, consistent schedule.  And that's huge for me.  I do better when I have a consistent routine.

~Watching~

The Dick Van Dyke Show:  Yup.  This has been regular evening viewing for the past several weeks now.  Ever since I went and bought all five seasons on eBay.  (Yes, it was worth it.  No, it was not a waste of money.  Why would you even ask such a silly question?)

Boy Meets World:  My brother-in-law introduced us to this show and we're currently watching through it at my brother's house on our weekly Monday night visit.  It's surprisingly good.  Better than I had expected.  Not that I would recommend it unreservedly because I don't like everything about it, but in my opinion it's a cute show, and I am growing quite fond of the characters.

Thumbs up?  Sure, Cory.

War and Peace:  O-kaaay.  So this movie was really quite something.  And by something I mean good somethings and bad somethings and...yeah.  To be brief, it had some highly inappropriate scenes and I wouldn't feel comfortable actually recommending it to anyone.  But...it also had some really powerful moments, some great character development, and some very moving storylines.  Also a really good ending.  So yeah, I admit, by the time it was over I was totally invested in a lot of the characters, and I might watch it again (provided of course that the handy-dandy remote is, well, handy.  You know.  ;))

The Good Doctor:  I rarely ever watch current TV shows, but my brother saw part of this while staying with my grandparents during the fall, and the two of us decided we'd like to watch it together.  So we got a free month's trial on Hulu and watched all eighteen episodes in a week and a half.   We just finished it last night and ohhh!  The last episode was so good, but so emotional.  I was close to tears, okay?  (Disclaimer:  I'm not really recommending this show.  I mean, I enjoyed it, but I feel like it should definitely be viewed with caution.  It's not for everyone.  First off it's a doctor show so there are lots of surgeries and blood and all that--honestly, I had to look away at some parts--and secondly they deal with some very adult topics, as well as some of the typical social issues of our day--coming of course to the politically correct conclusions on those topics, which happen not to my conclusions, so yeah.  That's kind of annoying.  It's definitely not a show for kids and, like I said, definitely to be viewed with caution.  That's my opinion anyway.) But aside from that, I really did enjoy this show.  And there are some really cool characters in it.  The main character, Shaun Murphy is of course my favorite.  He's such a unique character!  He's autistic, ridiculously smart, and brutally honest, which makes for some very interesting interactions with other people.  He's also just super sweet and very loveable.  And I like him a lot.  :D

And yeah.  I'm feeling kind of sad now because it's all over and there's no more to watch for another year.  :(

Still, there's an upside to it.  I won't have to be staying up till 1:00 and 2:00am anymore to watch it.  I'm pretty sure that's a good thing.  Would you agree?  (Haha.)

When Calls the Heart season five sneak peaks:  When you don't have TV and you can't watch the actual episodes, you watch the sneak peaks and the previews.  Not because they're necessarily worth watching but because you must have something to distract you from what you should be doing.   Isn't that how it works?

~Reading~

Jane Eyre: Started it.  Got distracted by other things.  Haven't read it for weeks.  Typical, typical, typical.  (I do want to get back to it sometime though.)

Jane Austen's Minor Works:  I've been making my way through these very slowly.  Her minor works are not like her novels.  Not so easy to get into.  However, I've still got my bookmark in place and I plan to finish them eventually.  Howsoever long it may take me.  What I really wanted to do was read her unfinished novels again, but they're at the end of the book so...must wait.  Gotta do things in order.

War and Peace:  Okay, so I was inspired to read this after watching the movie.  I mean, it's sort of been on my to-read list ever since my dad and brother read it the other year, but it's a daunting task, and I never quite got around to it.  Well, now I have.  And what do you know?  I am officially daunted.  Even more so as my older sister started reading it soon after I did, and had the audacity to read at a fast pace that I was reading.  I mean, that's not fair!  I started it first, I should finish it first.  But no.  She's way ahead of me now and there's no way I'm gonna catch her and...it's hurting my ego, guys.  I quit.  Okay, not exactly quit.  I mean, I am going to try and read the book still.  I just quit the race.  The race that really wasn't a race but which I made into a race out of pure selfish silliness--or silly selfishness--or whatever you want to call it.  Yeah, that one.  I own myself defeated and go and pout in a corner.  The end.

~Thinking~

...Exactly what else am I supposed to include in a "Lately I've been" post?  I mean, I've covered books and movies and work...what else is there?

Oh that's right!  I forgot!

~Writing~

*Dun, dun, dun, dun*

*cough*

Not much.

"Now, now.  If you can't think of anything better to say than that!"

Sorry, Percy, but it's the truth.  I've just not been doing much writing lately.  Unless you want to count emails.  But even those I'm starting to fall behind on.  They're piling up on me again and...OH NO!

Help, help!!  I'm drowning!!  Someone save me!  I can't write.  I can't think.  I can't...

"Do calm down.  There's no need to get flustered.  Sink me!  Just take a deep breath, and a pinch of snuff, and you'll be right as rain in a moment."

Did you say "sink me"?  Wow, that wasn't very sensitive of you, was it?  Right after I tell you I'm drowning, and you have to go and say "sink me".  Is that your idea of a joke?

"Odds fish, my dear fellow.  How you do talk!  You really are making very little sense just now.
But don't worry!  I have a plan!"

Oh yeah?  And what would that be, pray?

"Go to bed, Miss March.  Just go to bed."

And she did.

In keeping with the romantic theme for February...let's talk proposals

Hey, girls!  Here's a question for you.  Have you ever considered how you would like your future husband to propose to you?  You HAVEN'T?!  My dear girls, WHY NOT?  This is essential to your happiness.  You'd better think it through and come up with a good plan--and then be sure to let all your closest friends and family know so that they can give the proper hints to your intended whenever he happens to come on the scene--because a proposal is a HUGE big deal, and it must be special and memorable and absolutely perfect.

(Don't tell me I'm being sarcastic.  I know that.)

Let's consider a few options.

~The Scenic Walk Proposal~

This one's a definite winner.  Nice and simple.  No fuss and feathers.  Just thank him profusely for some gentlemanly act of his, and then make it as clear as clear can be that the bad opinion you once had of him is now entirely reversed.  He may not go down on one knee and say all sorts of silly romantic things to you but...who cares?  The look of relief and happiness on his face when you say "yes" is sure to make up for all that.

~Romance in the Rain~

If you're going for a more epically romantic setting, I suggest you order in some rain.  Because who wouldn't choose to have this conversation of conversations while drenched to the skin, huddled under a tiny umbrella, with water dripping from the ends of your hair and down into your face, and...I mean really!  What could be more pleasant and delightful than that?

~The Living Room Proposal~

Some may say this is not a proper proposal at all simply because it's too simple, but I say simple has it's place and sometimes simpler is better!  Just make sure you have a mom who's an expert at winking or this set up may not work for you all that well.

~The Picnic Proposal~

Now here's a nice setting for you.   Sitting down for a picnic under a large spreading tree, in front of a babbling, rippling brook.  You can't miss.  Your man is sure to be in the mood for proposing in such an environment.  Plus you will remember that place fondly for the rest of your life.  (Which is a key ingredient for a good proposal.  The place, the time, the day, everything, must be remembered vividly...forever.  Really.  It has to be that special, or it's a no go.)

~The Well Thought Out, Overly Ambitious Proposal~

This is the kind of proposal every girl dreams of right?  Where the man puts so much thought and effort into the occasion that...ahem...one begins to wonder whether he didn't hire a film crew to arrange the whole thing for him.  But oh the romance of it!  And he even goes down on one knee.  Which is just so romantic because like nobody ever does that, am I right?!  *sigh*

(But what I really want to know is...how, when, and where did he scrounge up all those jars of candles?  Talk about being proposed to by candlelight.)  (Talk about excessive.)

~On Stage Proposal~

Speaking of going big on proposals, some men like to make a real slam-bang show of it.  Like taking you up on stage and proposing to you in front of a huge audience.  This is really romantic, especially when you had no idea it was coming.  I mean I know I've always wanted to have a thousand pairs of eyes on me as my man bursts into a romantic song (or simply goes down on one knee in that oh so original fashion.)

~That Stranger in the Barnyard~

For those of you who are getting older and more desperate, do consider setting aside your romantic ideals.  Just say yes to that outspoken stranger who comes upon you as you're milking the cow in the dirty old barnyard.  Who cares about appearances and beautiful settings and all that?  Grab that man up and deal with the consequences thereafter.  (Because, you know.  As long as you don't get that sinking feeling after saying yes, you should be good, right?)

~The Prison Proposal~

Alright I admit, this one is leaning strongly on the side of the unconventional.  But you're really desperate now.  So forget about waiting for his proposal.  Propose to him!  And don't take into account the fact that he's in prison and extremely depressed about his current situation, just do it.  After all, not every proposal can end in a happily ever after, and what's life without a little risk?  (Hint: After this failed attempt go and find some way to lose all your money.  I guarantee, it'll help tremendously.)
*****

Well I guess that about covers it.   You should be able to come up with a satisfactory proposal idea from these examples, I should think.  And if not, well, write to me and I'll try and come up with something better.  There's always the "carrying the girl off by force" technique.  That's proven to have good results.

Take it from the Pontipees.
And maybe after all you would prefer such a unique approach.  (Girls have been be known to prefer sillier things.)  In which case, give me your guy's contact information and I'll let him know how things stand.  Just leave it to me.  I'll arrange everything.  I only suggest that you be on the alert for cat calls in the night, open windows, and other similarly dangerous situations.

Okay enough of the silliness.  Let's be serious.

If you had to choose between the above mentioned proposals (the settings, not the situations...like if you want to be proposed to in a barnyard by someone you actually know that can definitely be an option) which would you choose?

Do you like the idea of a public declaration in front of loads of people, or do you prefer something more intimate, just between you and your man?  Do want your guy to put a lot into it and plan out a whole big event, or would you prefer something simple and spontaneous?  We really must hash out these details because you never know when they might come in handy.

For me personally, I'm very much leaning toward the relaxed, spontaneous approach.  And furthermore, I think I'm pretty much decided that I do not want him to go down on one knee.  I know that's supposed to be the proper, romantic way to do it, but when everybody does it, it kind of loses it's romantic charm.  (In my opinion anyway.)

So yeah, if I had to choose, I think it would be a toss-up between the Scenic Walk Proposal and the Living Room Proposal.  Because I like simple.  And if he doesn't give me a ring right away I'm okay with that, too.  In fact, my sisters and I have decided that it would be rather fun to have your guy propose to you and then say, "Alright.  Now we're going on a date to pick out your ring!"  And you'd get to go and pick it out with him.  I mean, wouldn't that just be really sweet?

Okay, I think I've rambled on long enough.  If you're still in doubt as to the purpose of this post well...that makes two of us.   I propose we end it here and think no more of it.  What do you say?

Name a couple that should have been together
Diana Barry and Gilbert Blythe.  They would have been so perfect together, don't you think?!  And Diana liked Gilbert.  It should have happened!  *cries*

Name a couple that should have stayed friends...or did stay friends...
ANNE AND GILBERT OF COURSE!   Because like I said, Gilbert and Diana should have ended up together.  Anne and Gilbert were great as friends, but as a couple?  No, that was just wrong!

.....

Wait!  NO!  Don't shoot, don't shoot!  I'm only kidding.  Really.  You didn't honestly believe that was my real opinion, did you?  Seriously, I WAS JOKING!!!!  (Wow.  I think I almost lost my head on that one.)

Okay.  Let's begin again.  I'll try and be serious this time.  (If I can.  'Hem.)

Name a couple that should have been together

John Chivery and Amy Dorritt.  (Miss March. You're doing it again.)  *gasp*  I am?  Oh, pardon me.  I don't know what's gotten into me today. (And now I mentioned John.  Why did I do that?  Poor Jooooohn!!! *sobs*)

Alright.  Hold on a moment.  Let me think.  I'll come up with something.  I will.

*think, think, think*

Ah!  I've got one!  (With the help of my brother because I honestly couldn't think of anyone but he reminded me and I'm forever grateful.)  Tristan and Alice from All Creatures Great and Small (second season).

Okay, technically Tristan isn't fictional but from what I heard a lot of his storylines were made up in the series so...it can count right?  And he and Alice so should have ended up together.   Really!  She was perfect for him.  So sweet and caring, and she called out the best in him.  (Which is quite a tricky thing to do with Tristan, you know.  Haha.)  And plus, THEY WERE JUST SO SWEET TOGETHER!  I was really annoyed that Alice was only in like two episodes.  Like why?  (That wasn't nice, filmmakers.)

Name a couple that should have stayed friends...or did stay friends...

I agree with Cordy!  JO AND LAURIE ALL THE WAY!  They were meant to be friends.  Totally and completely.  And brother-in-law and sister-in-law?  EVEN BETTER!

Name a couple that looked like the chances of a happily ever after were next to none!

Paula and Smithy from Random Harvest.  My heart, the things that couple went through!

Name a couple that is just sooo happy!

Lizzy and Mr. Darcy.  Especially in this scene here.  You can literally feel their happiness.

Name your favorite fairytale couple

Now wait a minute, Cordy!  I thought you said there weren't any "favorites" in this game. This isn't fair.  I'll have you know you've just made this extremely difficult for me.   *pouts*

Okay fine.  I'm going to be boring and go with Kit and Ella because I can't think of any others I like better.  (This was not a nice question.  Why couldn't Cordy have simply said, "Name a fairytale couple"?  Why did it have to be "a favorite fairytale couple"?  Ohhh, that wasn't nice...not nice at all, precious...  *goes off mumbling*)

Name a couple where the woman is basically ignored by the suitor until the end of the story (frustration at it's finest!! :P :P)

Max and 99 from Get Smart.  I mean, "Come on, Max.  Get your act together!  Can't you see 99 loves you?"

Thankfully by the fourth season he finally gets the message.  :)

Isn't this an adorable picture?

Name a couple that found love later in life

Mr. Chips and Katherine.

I don't know how old "later in life" is supposed to be so they may not quite fit, but at any rate I know Mr. Chips wasn't super young when they met, and even if Katherine was still in her twenties, well.  As an old maid of twenty-five years myself, I'd say that's quite late enough.  :P

Name a couple from a musical

Maria and Captain Von Trapp

Name a couple that didn't start out on the right foot

That would be like every single fictional couple ever right?  I mean, there is a law against fictional couples starting out on the right foot, isn't there?  (Hahaha.)

I'm going with Dusty and Donavan.  Because yeah.  Those first few moments of their marriage?  Very promising indeed.  (Not.)

Name a couple with the sweetest love story

Right.  I know these two aren't fictional (neither were Maria and Captain Von Trapp for that matter) but can I include them anyway?  Please?  Because their story is so sweet and I just can't think of a better one right now.

I realize these two didn't have a happy ending but aside from that their whole relationship is just so adorable, I had to mention it.  After all, they're one couple that was on the right foot from the beginning, and that's quite surprising (and refreshing).  (Oh, but that's right.  They were real people.  Not fictional.  Do you think that's the difference?  Can it be possible that people in real life are often more sensible than people in fiction?  ;))

*****

Well, I guess that's it!  Tell me, which of the couples mentioned in this post are you familiar with, and which ones have you never heard of before?  Who's your favorite fairytale couple?

In which I find fault with the ending of North and South

Now hold on a moment!  Don't jump all over me.  I haven't even started yet!

You may come away from this post still thinking well of me.  You may indeed!  And if perchance you don't, well at least you won't have to have it on your conscience that you jumped all over a poor defenseless little person like me--who never did you any harm except to make a few derogatory remarks about your favorite movie.  (If it is your favorite movie, that is.)

I am quite aware of the fact that the ending scene of North and South is a highly romantic one and that if I had any sense at all I should be utterly swooning over it.  I mean really!  The epic meet-up in the train station!  Could there be anything more romantic than that?  And then the oh so romantic way in which Mr. Thornton removes that precious yellow flower from his pocket!  Doesn't it just sweep you off your feet?  And the kiss...ohhh!  Don't even get me started on the kiss.

I reiterate.  If I had any sense at all I should be absolutely overcome by such a climactic finish.  Shouldn't I?  Shouldn't I?  (But then.  I haven't got any sense, have I Jip?)

So I plunge into a nitpicky post on the ending scene to North and South, sparing no one's feelings, making enemies for life, and impressing upon you all what a very obnoxious overly-opinionated person I am.

(Oh, but Natalie.  Just so you know, I do still like this movie.  And I was totally serious when I said I liked it the first time, too. I wasn't just saying that to make you feel good.  Really and truly I wasn't.  The only reason I'm picking it apart now is because...well, sometimes when you watch a movie a second time you start to notice things, you know?  And when you watch it with unappreciative brothers who snort at every other line, you notice things even more.  What else can I say?)

Explanations aside.  Here we go.

~ First off, I would just really like to know why.  Why?  Why at such a time, right after he's lost his business, right when he should be home comforting his mother and being comforted by her--not to mention making plans for the future--why does Mr. Thornton suddenly find it imperative to take a trip down south to visit the place where Margaret grew up?  It just seems so random to me!  Like would that really be his natural response after all that had happened?

I went to her old home, picked a flower, and everything was fine!
(Don't ask me why.  I just did it.  And it worked.)

~ And then of all the coincidences, Margaret just happens to be taking a trip at the same time as Mr. Thornton, their two trains just happen to stop at the station at the very same moment, and Margaret just happens to decide to get out and stretch her legs and wala!  There's Thornton!  Well, hello!  Let's have ourselves a talk.  Here on the train platform.  Because...why not?  We haven't talked in a while.  That would be fun.

~ (Oh! now I know why Thornton went to see Margaret's old home!  It was so that they could meet up on the return journey.  Why else?)  (A very clever trick of the directors, that.)

~ So they come face to face, and Margaret says she's been to Milton because...I don't know, can you think of anything better for her to say?  And then Mr. Thornton replies, "You'll never guess where I've been," while pulling a yellow rose out of the pocket of his vest.  (Because he's either in a very romantic mood or a very random mood.  I don't know.  Personally I don't know many guys who go around carrying roses in their pockets!)  Of course Margaret can guess where's he been because, you know, where else would that rose have come from but her dear old Helstone?  And she melts at the sight of it--because it's all so touching and romantic--and she remembers how she thought the roses were all gone and asks Mr. Thornton "Wherever did you find it?"  But I say, WHY did you find it?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall Margaret ever mentioning the roses to you before, sir.  HOW DID YOU EVEN KNOW THEY WERE SIGNIFICICANT TO HER ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU GO SEARCHING THROUGH THE HEDGEROWS TO FIND ONE???  Ahem.  (Oh, that's right.  The scriptwriter knew she was holding one on the train when the movie first started.  Margaret didn't have to tell you, because the scriptwriter tells you everything.  I forgot.  Sorry to be so dense.)

~ So then they sit down on the bench to talk because Margaret has a business proposition.  (And this is as good a time as any for discussing business right?  Right.)  Margaret declares she's going to save Mr. Thornton and his business (hurrah for Margaret!), but that she's doing it out of purely selfish motives and he will of course owe her nothing.  Then she kisses his hand and...I don't know somehow things don't look quite so business-like as they had at first.

~ And then!  And then!  All of a sudden there's a wealth of understanding between them.  Don't ask me how.  After months of  misunderstandings, practically no communication at all, and flip-flopping opinions of each other which would put anyone's head in a whirl, all of a sudden it's all forgotten!  They kiss!  And BOOM BANG ALL THE ROMANCE!!  (And all the squirming amongst the audience because...that kiss was mushy.  And way too drawn out.  Don't you know how to kiss, people?  Well then do it quickly and get it over with!  Please.)

~ But what I really want to know is...HOW?  How is there such an understanding between them?  Why are they kissing when they've said barely a word to each other?  And WHY does Margaret immediately decide to go back to Milton with him?  I mean THE GUY (no, not Guy, just the guy...) HASN'T EVEN PROPOSED TO HER!!  Sure he kissed her, but what does that even mean???  Do you realize it's been over a year since his original proposal?  Rejected proposal's don't just hang around waiting until that magical moment when you decide to kiss and make up.   They don't!  After all this time there has got to be a second proposal.  It only makes sense.  And I for one did not see anything like a second proposal amidst all that kissing.  I'm sorry, but it wasn't there.  In real life people need to talk.  They need to hear things in a straightforward and clear manner.

~ On that note, Margaret and Mr. Thornton, why can't you talk?!  Like ask each other some questions or something.  Communicate!  Kissing is all very well (actually no, it's rather icky -coughcough-) but in the long scheme of things it really accomplishes very little.  I mean neither of you even thought to ask the other anything like, "How are you doing?"  or "What are you thinking?"  "Do you really still love me?"  or even "Who are you?!"  Because honestly, if you think about it, YOU HARDLY KNOW EACHOTHER!  You've exchanged like what?  Ten sentences with each other since you first met?  And most of those argumentative ones?  WHY DO YOU EVEN LOVE EACHOTHER ANYWAY?? I don't get it.  (Oh, forgive me.  I forgot.  The directors.  And the author.  They said you were to love each other, so love each other you must.  That's fair enough I guess.)

~ On a side note, why did Henry Lennox have to be along on this trip?  He's so pointless.  Nobody cares about him.  But yet we have to look at his sour, disappointed lover's face in the midst of the glad reunion between the hero and the heroine.  What a great way to detract from the romantic mood you're trying to set.  Three cheers, filmmakers!

Yes, why did he have to come along?

~ Oh, and one more thing.  About Margaret.  Couldn't she at least look happy for once?  I mean like really, really happy? Because I just find it extremely hard to be moved by a romantic love scene in which the young lady has the same expression on her face she's worn throughout the entire film.  (Practically speaking anyway.)  JUST SMILE CAN'T YOU?!!  If Mr. Thornton can smile you certainly can.  And I mean a real smile.  Not a sorrowful little half smile, but a really, really happy smile.  Why can't this be done?  Is it really asking too much?

Okay.  I think I have thoroughly exhausted this subject and no doubt thoroughly exhausted my readers in the process.  Please forgive me for this rant-style post.   I'm afraid I get a little carried away sometimes.

And please understand, there was a lot of sarcasm in this post.  I don't actually hate this movie.  Really I don't.

As a final thought though I would like to say that I agree with my brother.  They should have had at least one more scene in the movie.  A scene back in Milton--with the mill up and running again, all the workers back, Thornton and Margaret working together, and everyone happy for once in their lives.  I think that would have been a much better wrap-up to the story, and much more satisfying.  But that's just my humble opinion.  (Which humble opinion I have a feeling you're quite sick of by this point.)

Don't worry.  I'm leaving now.

What is your opinion of all this?  Do you like the ending to this movie?  Do you think I have legitimate reasons for complaining about it, or do you think I've completely misunderstood the whole thing?  Tell me what you think!

P.S.  Anna and Natalie and everyone else who likes this movie.   You're still my friends, right?  You won't cast me off forever for being such a nitpicky person, will you?  ;)
