Jane Austen Tag

Alright, I've decided to get in on the fun and whip off these answers right quick.  (If that is possible, which it probably isn't.  It's 10:43 p.m.  Let's see how long this takes me.  One, two, three.  GO!)

Naomi is hosting a Jane Austen week over at her blog and has come up with a whole list of questions for all of us to answer.  Go ahead and check out her blog.  There's a  lot of Jane Austen related fun going on over there.

Now then.  To get back to the questions...

1. On a scale of 1 to 10, how much of a Jane Austen fan do you consider yourself?

Probably an 8-9 or something.  I'm not a "blast it from the roof-tops" fan, but I do love her books, as well as all the movies which I feel measure up to them.  (You can ask me which movies those are, if you want to...)

2. If "they" would make a new Jane Austen Movie, and you would be able to be cast in it, which Jane Austen character would you most like to play?

Ah!  Now that's a fun question.  I think I would enjoy (and feel right at home) playing Eleanor Tilney.  I have a brother who slightly reminds me of Henry Tilney, so the brother/sister sparring would come quite naturally.  Also.  Mary Musgrove (from Persuasion) would probably be a very enjoyable character to portray.  I don't know, I just feel like I could pull off the whiny, "poor me" character very well.  After all, I've had a lot of practical experience in that area.  (Just kidding.  I am not that bad.)  But she would be very fun to play, I'm sure.

3. Is there any felicity in the world superior to a walk?

How about a nap?  They're awfully nice.  :)

4. Who's your favourite Jane Austen 'villain'? (As in 'villain' meaning 'the bad guy.')

Hmm...Willoughby perhaps?  There are times when one catches a glimmer of hope for his improvement, and I always feel sorry for him when he comes and apologizes to Elinor.  (In the book that is.  They skip that part in the '95 movie.  And the only feeling I ever remember having toward Willoughby in the 2008 version was a feeling of the utmost abhorrence.  He's a creep.  And I'll waste not my pity on him.)

5. What/Who introduced you to Jane Austen?

My parents.  I grew up watching Pride and Prejudice '95, so I really can't remember a time when I was not acquainted with her.

6. Did you love/enjoy Jane Austen immediately, or has there been a time when you hated (um, prejudged) it?

I've always liked Jane Austen.  Is that any wonder?  With my first taste of her work being the 1995 Pride and Prejudice, could there have been any other reaction?

7. Who, in your opinion, is the funniest Jane Austen character?

That's not fair!  I mean it!  That is NOT a fair question! How in the world am I supposed to decide between so many characters?  Alright, alright.  I'll do it.
Mr.BennetHenryTilneyJohnKnightlyMr.PalmerMaryMusgroveMr.KnightlyEmmaMr.EltonMrs.Elton.  And that's all I have to say on the subject!

8. Do you quote Jane Austen randomly in public?

Probably.  If I'm in the company of my siblings, and a proper opportunity presents itself, I don't know why I wouldn't.

9. Are children allowed to eat cake on weddings?

Well, if they're not I was a bad child all my growing up years.  (Sorry, Mr. Woodhouse.)

10. What is your reaction when you hear that an acquaintance (e.g. A lady at Church) of yours loves Jane Austen?

Hmm...I guess I get excited.  It's always fun to find someone who likes what you like.  And then, of course, if I'm feeling talkative (or if politeness simply requires it) I'll start asking them questions about which books/movies they like best.  Those are usually fun conversations.

11. Who writes better letters, Mr. Darcy or Captain Wentworth? (If you forgot what the letters were, shame on you, instead tell me if you prefer Strawberries to Chocolate or not.)

I don't know.  They're so vastly different.  Let's go with a tie.  (Yes, that was a cop-out.)

12. Which Jane Austen heroine do you relate the least to?

I don't know.  Marianne.  She walks too much.  (Okay, so that was another cop-out.  But look, it's getting very late here.  You can't expect my brain to be working at this time of night.  Poor little brain.)

13. What's your favourite Jane Austen house (from one of the movies)?

Longbourn.  It's the most familiar, being the one I've visited the most.  Thinking about it now gives me a wonderful nostalgic feeling.

14. What's your favourite Jane Austen dress (from one of the movies)?

I really like this dress of Jane's from Emma 2009.  White dresses with dainty blue trimming always give me a thrill (or at least this one does...not sure if I've seen any others).

The back of the dress is lovely.  And also, look at the sleeves.  Aren't they cool?

15. Can you turn off lit candles with your fingers?

I have not tried this yet, but I believe I could...that is, if I had some water to wet my fingers.  I wouldn't try it otherwise, you know, because that would be silly, and even Mr. Darcy wouldn't do that.

Thank you for the tag, Naomi!

And thank you all for reading my answers!  I'm afraid I got a little silly on some of them, but let's just blame it on the lateness of the hour and call it a night, shall we?  (By the way, you may congratulate me.  It is now 12:07!  I completed this post at the tremendous speed of one hour and 24 minutes!  ...27, rather.  It just took me three minutes to write that last sentence.)

Good-night!

    EXACTLY. HEAR HEAR. :-)

Jane's white dress is so sweet! The sleeves are a bit weird, though. But I love the blue embroidery. Good choice - I like it. :-)

Thank you for doing this, Miss March! Loved reading your answers. :-)

    1. Are they weird? *looks at Jane's sleeves more closely* Hmm...yes. I can see why you would think so. They're definitely very unique. No doubt about that. ;)

Oh, you're welcome! It was a lot of fun! Thank YOU for all the fun questions!

  2. I loved reading your answers! Haha, I am going to take you at your word: Which Austen movies do you like? I really would be interested in knowing . . . we could compare :P

    #7 made me laugh :)

I relate the least to Marianne myself - she is just too emotional. I mean, I have the emotions and feels and all that stuff going on but I don't tend to SHOW it. She shows just EVERYTHING, she always has to say what she's thinking. That is SO not like me. I think it's because I am an INTJ, very introverted and practical. (as a side question, have you ever taken a personality test? They're a lot of fun :))

    I love that dress of Jane's :)

Oh and congratulations on finishing the tag that fast -- I am never able to think rationally at that hour, myself :D

    1. Well...Pride and Prejudice 1995 and Emma 2009 are the only two adaptions which completely satisfy me. I also like Sense and Sensibility 1995, but it's too short. And the '08 S&S was excellent in regards to Elinor and Edward, but rather failed in creating a proper Jane Austen feel (in my opinion). I've seen three other versions of Emma and the 2005 P&P. All...eh. They just don't feel like proper interpretations of the books (of course we all have our own ideas about what's the proper interpretation, so I'm not saying mine is the 'right' one, but yeah. They didn't do it for me.) I just recently watched Persuasion 1995 and really liked it...only I can see them making a better one sometime because, again, it was too short. (Felt a little bit rushed at the end.) And then there's Persuasion 2007 which I did not like AT ALL. Don't ask me why, because it's been too long and I can't quite remember. ;) ...Whew. That was a rather long-winded answer to your question.

What was #7? Oh, yeah. Heehee. Glad it struck you as funny!

Yeah, I'm not an overly expressive person, either...at least not ALL the time. I tend to keep things inside, more like Elinor. I'm an introvert, too. And extremely practical. (I don't think I ever have taken a personality test, at least not that I can remember. It would probably be fun to try sometime, except I'm pretty horrible at coming up with answers to those types of questions.)

Isn't it lovely, though? I really like the blue trimming. So pretty.

Thanks! :D I was happy to get it finished. Blog posts can take me an extremely long time to complete, sometimes.

Thank you for another lovely comment, Rosie!

    2. I am a big fan of Emma 2009! When I read the book I had trouble "seeing" the characters, but this version really brought the story to life for me. Now Jonny Lee Miller and Romola Garai will always be Mr. Knightley and Emma to me :)

I actually like P&P '05. I know 'most everybody doesn't like it but it actually is very like how I've always imagined it when I read the story. However I know a lot of people have problems with it - I think it all comes down to how different people imagine a story different ways.

I like S&S '08 a LOT. It actually is one of my favorite movies EVER, just as a movie. Edward and Elinor I Love To Pieces, and I like how the sisters are younger in this version. I think that Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet were just too old for me to be able to really get into the story. And I LOVE David Morrissey's Colonel Brandon. I just do. It's a thing :P

I've never seen any of the Persuasion movies. I do like the 2007 Captain Wentworth. I remember my sister watched the 2007 version and she also thought that it was rushed.

Yay! Another introvert :) You know, if you take several tests it can give you a "general idea" what you are and then you can go and read the descriptions of the various types and choose which fits you best. That's what I did. It's a lot of fun but kind of scary if you hit on a personality that is just SO YOU and you're like, "Hey! How do they know me so well?!!"

      You're welcome :) :) :)

    3. Oh, I agree. The 2009 version really makes the characters come alive! I don't think they could ever make a better one.

That's true. It really is amazing how we all see things so differently. I guess it's a good thing then that there are so many different versions of these stories. That way, so many more people can enjoy them.

Oh, I REALLY liked Edward and Elinor in the 2008 movie! And I agree, it is really cool that the girls are younger in that version. Emma Thompson does look a little bit old for Elinor. However, I think Kate Winslet fit the age alright. I liked how she acted Marianne better than the girl in the newer movie. As to Colonel Brandon, well...I have yet to see a film version of him that I really like.

I liked a lot of the casting for Persuasion 2007, but, yeah, it definitely needed to be longer. As for Captain Wentworth, he was not at all how I imagined him from the book, but he was still good in the movie, anyway.

Haha! Yeah, I can see how personality tests could be a little bit creepy. :) "How in the world did they know that?" :) It's pretty crazy how they can figure all that stuff out.

      ~Miss March

    4. No, I don't think there will ever be a better one :)

You're right! With so many versions, then more people can enjoy them and choose their favorite versions :D

Elinor and Edward in the '08 version were amazing. As for Marianne in the old movie, it's harder to tell . . . I think it just comes down to the fact that girls are at all different maturity levels when they are 17. Kate Winslet could pass for a 17 year old I think, but Emma Thompson is definitely too old for the part. But I think they picked her because she was famous.

You know, *I* really love the '08 Colonel Brandon but because he is such a quiet, stay-in-the-background person in the book, I could see how you could have a totally different interpretation of his character and thus not like either version :D

I never could really figure to myself anyway, exactly HOW I imagine Captain Wentworth. That's probably why I fix on the 2007 version as my "favorite".

      It is! :P

    5. Can I just say something? Kate Winslet was actually 19 when she played Marianne, and Charity Wakefield was 28. So I really think Kate Winslet's Marianne was better qua age. :-D

Anyway. Just had to say. :-D

      Delete
    6. Rosie, that's true. Some seventeen year olds can look really grown-up while others still look like girls. I definitely think Kate Winslet could pass for seventeen, but yes, Emma Thompson is definitely older than Elinor should be. Ah, well. I guess that's just how it is sometimes. I think she did a good job playing the part, anyway. Oh! I need to reread Sense and Sensibility and look more closely at Colonel Brandon. I'm pretty sure I liked him in the book. He just never excited me too much in the movies. :/

Naomi, Thanks for jumping in! That is a very interesting fact. I THOUGHT Kate Winslet was young enough for the part! And Charity Wakefield was 28? Wow! Just goes to show you some people can look a lot younger than their age, while other's look a lot older. :D (I wonder how old Emma Thompson was?)

      Delete
    7. Wow Naomi I would never have guessed that! Thanks :)

Miss March, yes, I guess so :) How the ACT is really the important part. Definitely you should reread Colonel Brandon. He's just soooo amazing :P

    8. Emma Thompson was 36. Yeah. Too old. :-/

  3. Yippee! I was hoping you would answer the 'tag' call!

I enjoyed the reading. I didn't mind that you were 'silly' at all. I love a good laugh! I guess that is just the Lizzy in me coming out. ;)

And because I seem to be the first comment...I'll ask you what your favorite books and movies are because I am vastly curious! Hehehe.

    1. Aww, thanks, Cordy. It makes me happy to think that you were actually hoping for this post. :) Glad you enjoyed it; and that you did not mind my silliness! :D

Do you mean favorite Jane Austen books and movies? (I'll just go with that, because it's simpler.) My favorite Jane Austen books are probably Pride and Prejudice, Northanager Abbey, and Emma. But I really like Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility, too. Mansfield Park is probably my least favorite. As to Jane Austen movies...well, I just went over that in my comment to Rosie McCann, so if you want you can just scan over that first paragraph. That should give you a pretty good idea. (And if by chance you were asking what my favorite books and movies, in general, are--not strictly Jane Austen--well then I shall refer you to my profile. I think I have some listed on there.) Sorry, I'm afraid my mind's drawing a blank. :)

      Thanks! :)

And thank you for your sweet comment!

    2. I truly do enjoy reading your posts! As to silliness: "I delight in everything ridiculous!" ;)

We have more in common than I thought. :) I took your advice and popped over to your profile to do a little reading on you. You've read David Copperfield?! That's awesome! (Janet, donkeys!) So have I! And I think you are the only person I know, outside my own family, who has read it. AND you, not only have read it, but you have listed it as a favorite! David Copperfield was the first 'true Dickens' (I had read Christmas Carol before) that I actually took on. Dickens is incredible isn't he? But I need to contain my gushing here for just a moment. :)

And you like Lord of the Rings?! That's brilliant as well.

Oh, and Sarah Plain and Tall!

I could go on for awhile! We must be (how do you write out blogging kindred spirits I wonder...) hmmm.

      ~Cordy

P.S. I'm with you on drawing a blank when I am asked about my favorite things. Isn't that strange? I can't ever remember what my favorite things are when I'm put on the spot.

      Delete
    3. Yes! I love David Copperfield! It's probably my favorite Dickens' book, along with A Christmas Carol and Nicholas Nickleby. (Have you ever read Nicholas Nickleby? It's an excellent book!) And yes, Dickens is an amazing author! :)

Oh, I really like The Lord of the Rings. It's such a beautifully written story.

You've seen Sarah Plain and Tall?!! Cool! Isn't that such a good movie? (Have you seen the sequels, Skylark and Winter's End? Skylark is really good, in my opinion, but Winter's End...not so much. It is cool to see how the kids look when they're older, though.)

Blogging kindred spirits...hmmm. I guess we need to come up with a term for that. :)

      ~Miss March

P.S. Exactly! It's being put on the spot that does it, I think! Also, it's hard to narrow things down and decide which movies and books are REALLY your favorites! :)

    4. I have read, David Copperfield, Our Mutual Friend, Bleak House and I started...got halfway through... and then skimmed...Great Expectations. (I know shame on me! However, since I had read a few Dickens before GE, I didn't feel to guilty for skimming it.) I haven't tried Nickleby yet. Perhaps I should make that my winter read. :) However, I do think that Bleak House is my favorite thus far. It edged out DC by just a little bit. ;) Have you tried Bleak House?

I never get tired of reading the Lord of the Rings. Tolkien is another genius author! I can foresee many posts about Tolkien coming as I continue to work on my blog. (That's one of the advantages of a blog...I can write about all the things I love and my family doesn't have to get worn out with all of my very detailed praise!) ;)

I adore Sarah Plain and Tall! And I have seen both of the sequels and I feel about the same way you do. I really love Skylark but I don't really watch Winter's End. I think I've only ever seen it once...in bits and pieces as I was in and out of the room. Oops. But the other two...I need to watch them more. Hahaha.

While I'm here and talking about some favorite things that we share:
      I also like the '95 P&P.
I really liked Amazing Grace (the movie). Fantastic!
Who know about the Happiest Millionaire too?! That's awesome! Isn't Mr. Biddle such a sweet father?! (Gosh, every time I respond to your comments I'm reminded of the million posts in my head. Mr. Biddle is one of those that I haven't worked on yet.)
Love the Anne of Green Gables movies but I avoid the 'third' one like the plague. Third, what third one...is there a third one...?<<<Yep, that's me! hehe.

I saw that you mentioned that you liked Little Women...like you are named after the four March girls or something like that ;) Have you ever read "Old Fashioned Girl"? Also by Alcott?

      ~Cordy

    5. You didn't finish Great Expectations? Tsk. tsk. Shame, shame. (Ha! Just kidding.) Actually, I hate to admit this to you, but Bleak House is one that I started and never finished. *shame-faced grin* You like Bleak House better than David Copperfield? Hmm...if it's that good, I should probably give it another try.

Oh, I know! Lord of the Rings is so good! And yes, it's nice to have a blog where you can ramble on about the things that you like.

Yeah, Winter's End just doesn't come up to the first two. :/

You've seen The Happiest Millionaire, too?? Oh, how delightful! Then you "understand" why I like that movie so much! Isn't it loads of fun, though? And yes, Mr. Biddle is wonderful (I love his relationship with Cordy)! And there are so many other great characters in that movie, too! John, Cordy, Angier, Mrs. Biddle, Tony, Liv! All of them are SO good! Talk about millions of post ideas! I've got loads in my head, too! (A review of The Happiest Millionaire is one of them, but I don't know when I'll ever get around to doing it.)

      Haha! Exactly. What third movie?

Oh yes. I've read most all of Louisa May Alcott's main children's books. Little Women, Little Men, Jo's Boys, Eight Cousins, Rose in Bloom, An Old Fashioned Girl, Under the Lilacs...and I think I may have read Jack and Jill, too, a long time ago. I love her books! Is An Old Fashioned Girl one of your favorites?

      ~Miss March

    6. Yup, BH over DC but only by a little bit. :D

I totally understand! I love everything about the Happiest Millionaire! It's one of the ones I grew up on! I really love Cordy and how realistic her struggles are. ...If only I could suffer through my struggles in her wardrobe! When she is trying to learn how to 'flirt' and Angier basically calls her on it. Love them together! There're so cute! "John! Coming sir!" "George!"

Yes, An Old Fashioned Girl is my favorite! If they would only make a movie of it! (An accurate movie!) I think I'm going to use that last scene with Polly and Tom for a Fictional Favorites post! I love the pair of them. Again, you are one of the few people I know who has read it. What did you think of it?

      ~Cordy

    7. That's what I like about The Happiest Millionaire. The characters are very realistic. (At least I think so.) Haha! "...If only I could suffer through my struggles in her wardrobe!" That would be nice, wouldn't it? Oh yes! I love that part! "But you saw me practicing. Didn't it scare you away?" "No. You were so bad at it." Hahaha! And John! Oh! He's so much fun! :D It's so cool that you grew up on that movie!

That would be really neat if someone would make a movie of An Old Fashioned Girl! (And yes! It would HAVE to be an accurate one...or they might as well forget it!) Oh, do include Polly and Tom in a Fictional Favorites post! That would be so neat. I love that pair, too. Tom's such a naughty, lovable person, isn't he? And Polly's so sweet. (What did I think of the book? Oh, I liked it! Very much indeed! Louisa May Alcott is one of my favorite authors!)

      ~Miss March

    8. I think the characters are very realistic and relatable! I wish we had movies like that now but alas...a moment of silence for the death of great movies....

      ...okay moving on...

Which is your favorite Alcott book?! Or is that asking for the impossible? ;) You have decided my mind, I will have to do a Polly and Tom post...and I might just include Fanny and Sydney. I love Fanny's progression through the book don't you? And yes, I really love Tom. I think I'm going to end up marrying a great tease someday. I think it's because they make me laugh! I can't guarantee when the post will come because I have some posts planned for the holidays but I will work on that! I don't know how many others will know about Tom and Polly but even if it's just you and I that is enough right?! :D

      ~Cordy

    9. "The death of great movies." Haha! It is a pity, isn't it? Really great movies seem to be few and far between these days. I do wish someone would make some GOOD adaptions of Louisa May Alcott's books, because they're such lovely stories; and they would make excellent movies...if done correctly.

Hmm...Little Women is probably my favorite Alcott book. It is hard to choose, though. The others are, all together, a very close second, I think. I wouldn't even want to try and choose between them. ;)

Oh, yes! Fanny. I love how she grows and matures. And thinking about what her character is like at the beginning of the book, it's actually rather amazing to think that she ends up with someone like Sydney. But I'm so glad she does.

I'm sure there's more people out there that know about Tom and Polly than you think. But even if we are the only ones, your post will definitely be worth writing. I'll look forward to reading it whenever you find time to post it. :)

I think you're right, playing Mary Musgrove could be a lot of fun.

Yes, I also felt really sorry for Willoughby when I read his apology (not in the movies though)
How lovely to have grown up with P&P 1995 (lovely collage by the way)

Oh, I know! A person really can feel sorry for him. Unfortunately the movies don't capture that too well. (By the way, which is your favorite S&S? I should probably already know since, after all, I did read your post about the ultimate Jane Austen adaptions. But...um...I actually can't rememer right now.)

Oh, I didn't make the collage. I just found it on the internet. :/ I'm not really well-versed in the art of editing pictures. It would be cool to learn, though.

Yes, Jane does have a splendid wardrobe. Come to think of it, pretty much everyone in that movie does! :)

Thank you so much for your comment, Rose! :)

    2. My favourite S&S is the 1995 version, it just captures the JA feel best in my opinion.

I know, that movie's wardrobe is one of my all time favourites, I'm actually writing a post on all of Emma's lovely outfits in that version.

    3. Oh, I agree. The '08 version struck me as a little too dark for Jane Austen. But that's just my opinion. :)

  6. Haha! MARY! How could I forget her? I really love that character; not quite sure WHY, but she's just such tremendous fun;)

That's so funny that we both picked Eleanor Tilney! And, yes, she is a very nice character. Such a sweet sister and friend.

Actually, I'm second guessing myself a bit. I haven't read Sense and Sensibility in a while so now I can't quite remember if Willoughby ACTUALLY apologizes, or if he just sort of makes excuses for his behavior. ...No, I think he really does apologize, at least after a fashion. Anyway, he feels bad enough about how his behavior caused him to lose Marianne that Elinor actually feels some pity for him. Have you never read the book? You really should. It has more details than the movie. Actually, I should read it again myself. :)

Heehee. Thanks for the well wishes! ;) My "little brain" is doing fairly well, as of today.

And yes, the flower on the back is one of my favorite parts of that dress. It's just cool. I can understand why it wouldn't be one of your favorite dresses, though. Actually, it's not my absolute favorite, either. It's just one that has stood out to me different times. I really don't tend to notice the dresses in movies all that much (least-ways I don't get extremely excited over them), so it's really hard for me to pick an actual favorite. You know?

    2. No, I've never read the book! Shameful, I know. I've owned it for awhile now, but I just haven't picked it up and read it yet between all my library books and other books I own that have still not been read. I'm hoping to do it soon. :) After my last library batch. ;)

I actually do tend to notice the outfits in movies....I annoy my family while watching movies because I'll repeatedly say things like "oh, I LOVE her dress" "her hair is sooo pretty!" and "oh I want her shoes!" Heehee. My dad makes fun of me for it. hahaha ;)

  8. Very fun post. Thanks for sharing, Miss March! :)

5 & 6 were fun questions...hmm. My mom introduced me to P&P, but I had a HUGE grudge against Mr. Darcy for the longest time because he snubbed Elizabeth at the dance...lol. I absolutely despised him, probably until my late teens. Eek! After I finally overcame that particular prejudice, I became a Jane Austen fan...but it took a while. :P

This post makes me want to see the '95 P&P. I've only seen the new one. I did enjoy it (I know, I know...treason!!) but I only saw a tiny bit of the old one, when I was too little to appreciate it. I am willing to be converted -- open to persuasion and willing to lay aside old prejudices. :P Maybe we should have a P&P movie night....:)

    1. You had a grudge against Mr. Darcy? Really, Crista! You're as bad as Lizzy! That's exactly how she reacted! Prejudice, indeed. You ought to have learned from reading that book that prejudice is NOT the thing. Haha! Anyway, I'm very glad you got over it, and that you are now a fan of Jane Austen, because otherwise we would not have had such a jolly fun time watching Emma together. Isn't that right?

Okay! That does it! We definitely have to have a P&P '95 movie night sometime, because I'm just scandalized that you haven't seen that film yet! You've only seen the new one??? "Oh, you sad girl." (Mrs. Elton quote!) That movie was awful! I'm not going to even talk about the fact that you enjoyed it, because I might blow my top. Haha! Just kidding! (And no..I am not at all prejudiced. Not in the least. ;))

    2. I know...I'm so bad. :P

Had a BLAST watching Emma with you, btw! Thank you! And yes, we need to watch P&P '95 sometime...I mentioned it to Andrew and he was scandalized that I haven't actually seen it yet. Apparently my education is not yet complete. I have much to learn. :)

    3. Haha. You really are. Very, very naughty! :P

Oh, I did, too! It was SO much fun!

And as to watching P&P '95, we must plan a time. I don't know if everyone else would agree to watch it on a Tuesday night, but I'm sure we can come up with something. Because, really. Your education is of the utmost importance! (Heehee.)
