30 of my Favorite Movies

Naomi did a post about her favorite movies the other day, which was inspired from a post written by Eva back in February.  Clearly the inspiration has spread, as I am now here with my list of favorite movies.  :)  (Thanks for the post idea, Eva and Naomi!)

It's a hard thing for me to choose favorites.  I love all the movies on this list, but to varying degrees.  Some I gush over, some I don't.  Some are very special to me because I grew up on them, while others are newer finds.  This is definitely not an all comprehensive list--I'm sure there are more I could add--but it is what it is.

Here they are.  (And just so you know, they are in no particular order.  I couldn't even begin to list them least to greatest.  Nope.  That is an utterly absurd idea.  Absolutely impossible.)

1.  Pride and Prejudice

2. Amazing Grace

3. Jane Eyre

4. Emma 2009

5. Sarah Plain and Tall (and Skylark)

6. Random Harvest

7. It's a Wonderful Life

8. The Happiest Millionaire

9. The Fighting Prince of Donegal

10. Anne of Green Gables

11. Boys' Town

12. Saving Mr. Banks

13. To Kill a Mockingbird

14. Mary Poppins

15. Little Dorrit

16. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

17. The Scarlet Pimpernel

18. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

19. Across the Great Divide

20. The Apple Dumpling Gang

21. The Shop Around the Corner

22. Miss Potter

23. Captain's Courageous

24. Sergeant York

25. Robin Hood

26. Pollyanna

27. Oliver Twist

28. Old Yeller

29. Swiss Family Robinson

30. The Sound of Music

Okay, so I'm pretty sure there are more films I could have added which I like equally as much as some of these, but I was trying not to go over 30 and had to draw the line somewhere.

How many of these movies have you seen (or not seen)?
Are there any of your personal favorites on this list?

  1. Lovely post, Miss March! I really enjoyed reading and looking through all those delightful screen-caps! :D

Out of the 30 movies you listed here, I've seen 10 of them. I would say 11, but I've never seen the full movie for Emma. BUT from the snippets I've seen from that particular movie, I'm fairly certain that it would make it on my favourites list ;) A recent favourite would be The Scarlet Pimpernel. It's amazing!!! :) I love that screen cap you added for it :D And then the other 9 movies are favourites of mine too. I have too many favourites, to be honest ;) I like pretty much everything except for gory, gruesome movies, which I, for the most part, refuse to watch :P

    1. Thanks, Blessing. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

Oh, you really MUST watch the whole thing of Emma sometime. It is SUCH a good movie. And yes, THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL! So much fun! :) Ooh. Now I'm curious to know what the other nine movies are...

Yeah, gory and gruesome movies aren't exactly my cup of tea, either. I can handle them to a certain extent, but the story has to be VERY good to make up for it. ;)

    2. Oh, the other movies were Pride and Prejudice, Sarah Plain and Tall, It’s a Wonderful Life, Anne of Green Gables, Saving Mr. Banks, Mary Poppins, Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, and The Sound of Music :D

    3. Haha. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. ;) Oh, and you've seen Sarah Plain and Tall! That is so cool!! I don't know a lot of people who have seen that movie, so it's always neat when I find someone else who's familiar with it. Isn't it such a good movie, though? :)

    4. Yes, it's an amazing movie! I've seen the sequels to it as well, and though I really liked Skylark, I didn't enjoy Winter's End. Have you seen that one?

      Delete
    5. Yes! Skylark is an excellent sequel! As to Winter's End...uh...no. That one was a complete disappointment. We own it, but only because we made the mistake of buying it before we watched it. :P I do enjoy watching it sometimes when I'm in the mood for seeing the kids when they're older, but I sort of groan through the whole thing. The story just doesn't seem to fit with the first two movies, and the new characters are not nearly as endearing. (Cassie for one. She's nowhere near as cute as Caleb when he was little, and frankly she annoys me. ;))

  2. Ohh, I REALLYREALLY want to see 'The shop around the corner' sooo badly.
And yes, I spotted a lot of favourites on this list. Miss Potter, the Sound of Music, Emma... and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. <3 *sigh* (I love that P&P95 was both our first on the list. First one to come to mind, and all that.)

    1. Haha. So true! It really is the first to come to mind, isn't it? I LOVE that movie! :D

Oh, I hope you can see "The Shop around the Corner" sometime. I think you would really enjoy it! :)

  3. So many great ones! I've seen a lot of these...and a lot of them I haven't, but I'd like to! I like how you added so many older black-and-white ones. :-) My favorite on this list is definitely Amazing Grace -- pretty much the best movie ever, in my opinion!

  4. Oh, wow! I'm not sure I could narrow down my top 30. :o
I actually haven't seen too many of these.
(*squeals* I WANT TO SEE LITTLE DORRIT SO BAD!!!)

    I've seen:
P+P, Amazing Grace, Emma, It's a Wonderful Life, Happiest Millionaire, Red Hugh, Anne of Green Gables, Boys' Town, (I love that one!) Saving Mr. Banks, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Shop Around the Corner, (those last two were so long ago, I only remember parts) Miss Potter, Robin Hood, Pollyanna, Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson and Sound of Music.
    :)

(You've never seen Little Dorrit? Oh, I hope you can see sometime. It's a beautiful story. And it has some WONDERFUL characters.)

What do you mean you haven't seen too many of these? Seriously, girl, you've seen over half of them!! I'd say that's a pretty extensive list. ;) Oh, and you've seen Boys Town! That makes me so happy, because I love that movie, too!

  5. Picking favourites are so hard, I don't think I could ever narrow it down to 30!
I made a head count and I've seen 11 of these and they're all favourites of mine! Several of them are also on my to watch list

    1. You've seen 11 of these? Oh, which ones? (Unless you don't have time to list them all out, which I would entirely understand. ;))

Thank you so much for your comment, Rose! I missed you around the blogging world this past month. :)

  6. What a fun post! The only ones I haven't seen on your list are Random Harvest, The Fighting Prince of Donegal, Saving Mr. Banks, Across the Great Divide, Captain's Courageous, and Oliver Twist. I'll have to keep an eye out for those! :D

    1. Oh, I hope you can see some of these sometime. I think you would really like Random Harvest and Saving Mr. Banks. Actually, you might very well like all of these, but, of course, I can't guarantee it. ;) I'd love to know what you think of them if you ever watch them, though.

(Oh! Wait! You've seen Jane Eyre? I thought you had seen a different version. Or have you seen more than version? Which is your favorite?)

      Delete
    2. I will definitely try to remember and tell you my thoughts if/when I see them!

I've seen 4 different versions of Jane Eyre, I think. I just recently watched the Timothy Dalton/Zelah Clarke one. It was good, although not my favorite. :)

      Delete
    3. Oh goody! I'll look forward to that! :)

Wow. I've only ever seen the Timothy Dalton/Zelah Clarke version. I'd like to see some of the other ones sometime, though. It's fun watching different versions and comparing them. :)

    4. It is fun watching different versions! The three other versions I've seen are the 2011, 2006 miniseries, and old 1940's one. Out of the three, I think I like the 2006 best in terms of actors and such, but they added a lot of inappropriate content...I wouldn't recommend watching it unless you were really careful. I could tell you more about where to "skip" if you wanted. :) I would recommend the 2011 one, though. It's pretty clean, although they did add this one scene involving a painting of a woman-with-no-clothes-on...yeah. I don't understand why such scenes need to be added. :/ They certainly weren't in the book! I love the music in the 2011.The worst thing about the film is that it's a movie length, so they shorten the story up a bit. :(
The 1940's version (with Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine) is quite clean, of course, but I don't remember caring for it much. It would be fun to watch, though. :)

    5. I think my sister watched the 2011 version. I remember her telling me about that painting. :/ Ugh, yes. I don't understand the reason for scenes like that, either. They're so pointless. Oh! I didn't realize the 2006 version was a miniseries. That sounds better than a short movie length film, because you certainly can't do justice to the story of Jane Eyre in only 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Well, as I've had experience skipping parts in movies before, I don't think I'd be too worried about giving it a try sometime. And thank you! I'll know who to go to then if I need a heads up on which scenes to skip. I won't ask you for particulars just now because...haha...I'll probably forget them before I get around to seeing the movie. ;)

And, oh! Please don't stress out about replying to comments. Honestly, if you're too busy it's alright to skip replying even if you had originally meant to. It really is. :) I LOVE getting comments from you, but I certainly don't want you putting undue pressure on yourself.

  7. My, what a lovely long list! :D Let me see... I've seen P&P, Emma, Amazing Grace, Skylark (haven't seen Sarah, Plain and Tall yet!), The fighting Prince of Donegal, Anne of Green Gables, Saving Mr. Banks, Mary Poppins, Little Dorrit, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Miss Potter, Pollyanna (I have such fond memories of that movie! The preacher... "DEATH COMES UNEXPECTEDLY!!!" XD), Swiss Family Robinson (I love that movie to pieces!), and The Sound of Music.
As for the others, I have To Kill a Mockingbird booked in from the library, and It's a Wonderful Life and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in my possession, I just haven't seen them yet. :D They all look very good, though! :)
I was surprised to see there was no Little Women movie on this list. ;)

    1. Haha! Yes! "DEATH COMES UNEXPECTEDLY!" We used to quote that part a lot. And actually, we have videos of us delivering our own sermons inspired from that movie. They are...hmmm...rather interesting, to say the least. ;)

I love how you've seen so many of these movies!! Only, wait...you watched Skylark before watching Sarah Plain and Tall? MISS MEG! That is NOT the way to do it! ;) (Heehee. I'm teasing you, of course, but I hope you can see it sometime. They are both equally good.)

Ohhh! You've got a lot of good movies to look forward to! I hope you like To Kill a Mockingbird and the others when you finally get around to watching them!

Haha. I was wondering if anyone would notice that. ;) I love Little Women, but I'm not super happy with any of the movie adaptions I've seen. I like the 1949 version because of all the happy, nostalgic memories attached to it, but there's still a lot lacking in the overall story. And, yeah, the 1994 one doesn't quite do it for me, either. I'm still holding out for someone to make a LONG miniseries! That would be AWESOME! (Provided they cast all the right actors, of course!)

  8. Across the Great Divide!!!!!! Someone else who has actually seen that movie?!? How cool! Man, I watched that over and over and over as a kid. Wish I could find it on DVD and not pay through the nose for it. One day...

    1. You've seen Across the Great Divide??!! *Miss March squeals in delight!* Oooh! How fun! I love that movie! :D

Eeek! You're right. I just looked it up on Amazon. $50 for a DVD?! That's nuts! We have it on VHS. :P

    2. Yes! I adore it. My family still quotes it, especially, "Just ain't your day, Grey Fox."

My parents still have our old VHS copy, so I hope to show it to my kids next time we visit them.

    3. Oh, yes! That movie has a lot of good quotes! Zachariah Coop is hilarious! "You can't be that lucky, boy." "Ain't it somethin'? I can hardly believe it myself!" Haha! :D

Wow. I'm just SO excited that you know this movie! (Hence the silly grin on my face.) :D

I hope your kids enjoy it! It must be fun to share some of your childhood memories with your children. :)

    4. I'm excited too! I was just scrolling down your list, nodding and going, "Oh, yes, that was good, yes, nice movie, yes, I like that one a lot, okay, yes... wait a second!!!" You might be the first person I've run into who has seen that movie and isn't related to me by blood.

    5. Same here. I don't think I've ever met anyone who was familiar with this film outside of my immediate family. I'm so glad you said something, because discovering that there is someone else who knows about this movie has been a highlight of my week. :D No kidding.

Oh, yes, indeed. "When you're lucky, you're lucky!" ;)
